Land

North Central Kansas, sometimes called the Smoky Hills, characterizes a variety of natural settings: rolling green hills, limestone bluffs, post rock fences, lush river valleys, and endless, golden wheat fields.

Rural communities throughout the region are home to citizens with a strong work ethic who take pride in themselves and their region.

The majority of land is still used for farming or grazing. Wildlife abounds on the prairie, including buffalo. Tree-lined red brick streets and Victorian homes are common in residential areas.

North Central Kansas was a stopping place for Native Americans, soldiers, buffalo hunters and settlers on their way westward looking for gold. The descendents of those homesteaders, who make the region home, contribute a multitude of ethnic backgrounds.

Wide open space, clean air, gorgeous sunsets and blue sky are prevalent, but North Central Kansas is not isolated. Interstates 70 and 80 East and West, Interstate 135 North and South, four lane US 81 Expressway, and airports capable of receiving jet aircraft ensure easy access to metropolitan Kansas, the nation and the world.

Communities are people, not structures. They include farmers, manufacturers, and retailers with traditional values, integrity and reliability and hard working, friendly, and involved neighbors.

Unique to the area is Rock City, the largest natural formation of Dakota Sandstone in the world. The region also marks the geodetic and geographic centers of the United States.
